Last week a couple of friends and I were looking to meet in Exeter for a catch-up and lunch. Who knew there was quite so much choice?
There is such a buzz about the city at the moment and the recently released Exeter City Council video promoting the area as the ‘it’ place to build your business, celebrates everything there is to offer.
Working our way through a hit list of places to eat, drink and chat, we picked the newly opened Las Iguanas on Queen Street. Siting food as their ‘passion’ they serve a great selection of ‘Latin comfort food’ – perfect.
The food was fresh and they had a huge selection on offer. Together with the friendly service and delicious churros (a Spanish doughnut equivalent) with melted chocolate, I can highly recommend you take a trip to Latin America right here in Exeter.
This Saturday (December 7th), is Small Business Saturday – an established annual event in the US, it has arrived in Britain and is about celebrating all that is independent on our high streets. It’s a fantastic initiative that even the Prime Minister has lent his support to.
As you’d expect, there is lots going on in Exeter. The Federation of Small Businesses has teamed up with Exeter Trails and the city council to help promote the event and will be in Cathedral Green at the tourist information tent handing out leaflets.
The Lord Mayor of Exeter and MP Ben Bradshaw will be touring independent businesses in Fore Street and Cowick Street to show their support, where there will be fun activities for all the family – as well as a festive wrapping station for anyone who is challenged in the gift wrapping area!
But it’s not just Exeter getting involved; Axminster Chamber of Commerce has also encouraged traders to get fully behind Small Business Saturday, as has Honiton and Sidmouth.
It is a great chance to explore the wide range of independent shops across Exeter and East Devon and show our support by shopping locally this Christmas.
Another business which is doing its bit for charity this year is The Exeter Dental Centre, on Castle Street. The practice has set up a collection point for Exeter Foodbank donations which it will be delivering just before Christmas. As the centre is open 7 days a week, it is even easier to drop off your non-perishable food donation while out shopping in the city centre. Pop in and say hello, you’re guaranteed a warm welcome.
